Award Winning 3D Printed Miniature Satellite

Drishti- The technical hobby club of NIT Surat had participated in CanSat- miniature satellite making competition held for the first time in India.

Team Kranti- A dedicated team of 7 members that participated in the prestigious competition stood out as the champions of University Cansat Challenge 2015-16 organized by ARDL.

Current Problem:

In this competition, engineering students were required to make a miniature can-sized satellite that was launched, using a rocket, to a height of 400m and then descend using a descent control mechanism like a parachute. During this period, it has to take various atmospheric readings like pressure, temperature, GPS position, altitude, etc. and send the data in real-time to a ground control station using a communication module.

The team required many innovative ideas for their Cansat design; but the challenge lied in converting it into actual physical model that can withstand the atmospheric conditions and execute the dedicated task.

The outer body of the satellite was a crucial part, so the team opted for an innovative way of doing it. The team Kranti 3d printed body of their satellite since they wanted it to be light in weight, strong, cost-effective and could be made in the least time.

Solutions with DBZ Printers:

The outer body of the satellite was constructed using a DivByZero Technologies 3D printer that made it possible for team Kranti to develop the body in just two days time without the requirement of any mould.

3D printing, therefore, made it easy for Team Kranti to perform several iterations in designs and take on-the-go trials of its critical parts.

These Parts were made with ESD safe Polycarbonate materials resulting into high strength and RF shielded satellite body.

Team Krantis design and innovative way of executing its approach was welcomed and appreciated by the panel of ISRO scientists and the Director of Asteria Aerospace Pvt.Ltd which made Team Kranti, a truly winning team!
