How to Convert 3D Models into STL Files

Exporting from SOLIDWORKS to .stl

  1. File Save As
    • Navigate to File > Save As.
  2. Set File Type
    • In the Save As Type dropdown menu, select STL (*.stl).
  3. Options
    • Click Options to access the STL export settings.

STL Settings

  1. Resolution
    • In the Options dialog box, set the Resolution to Fine for a smoother STL file. Click OK and then Save.
  2. Custom Resolution
    • For more control over the quality, set the Resolution to Custom.
    • Change the deviation to 0.01 mm.
    • Change the angle to 5. Smaller deviations and angles will produce a smoother file but increase the file size.
  3. Review Export Options
    • It is advisable to review file export options before saving the file. This ensures optimal settings for your specific needs.

Saving Model or Model Assembly in STL Format

  1. Save As
    • Go to File > Save As to open the Save As dialog box.
  2. Select File Type
    • From the Save as type drop-down menu, select STL (*.stl).
  3. Export Options
    • Click Options. The Export Options dialog box will display the file in a tessellated view.
    • Ensure the File Format selection is set to STL.
  4. Output As Binary
    • In the Export Options dialog box, under the Output As section, select Binary. This results in a much smaller file size compared to ASCII format.
  5. Resolution Settings
    • In the Resolution section, select the appropriate option. If you select Custom, you can manually adjust the Deviation and Angle settings.
    • Lower deviation settings result in finer tessellation.
    • Lower angle settings result in greater accuracy, noticeable in small details.
    • Note that higher resolution increases the file size and the time required to generate the file.

Additional Considerations

  1. Single Material Builds
    • For single material builds, ensure the checkbox Save all components of an assembly in a single file is selected. This ensures all components are saved as a single STL file.
  2. Dual Material Builds (PolyJet)
    • For dual material builds, ensure the checkbox Save all components of an assembly in a single file is NOT selected. This will create individual STL files for each component of the assembly.
    • Note: An assembly with many units will result in many individual STL files when the checkbox is left unchecked.
  3. Final Steps
    • Click OK to close the Export Options dialog box.
    • In the Save As dialog box, click Save.
    • In the confirmation message, click Yes to complete the process.

Tips and Best Practices

  1. Scale and Units
    • Ensure your model is correctly scaled before exporting. The units in SOLIDWORKS should match the units your 3D printer uses to avoid scaling issues.
  2. Wall Thickness
    • Verify that your model has appropriate wall thickness. Thin walls may not print correctly or may be too fragile. Check your 3D printer’s specifications for minimum wall thickness requirements.
  3. Model Orientation
    • Consider the orientation of your model in the 3D printer. Proper orientation can reduce the amount of support material needed and improve the surface finish.
  4. File Size and Complexity
    • STL files can become very large with high resolution. Ensure your computer can handle the file size and that your 3D printer’s software can process it. Simplify the model where possible to reduce file size without compromising print quality.
  5. Manifold Geometry
    • Ensure your model is manifold (watertight). Every edge should be connected to exactly two faces. Non-manifold geometry can cause errors during 3D printing.
  6. Software Updates
    • Keep your SOLIDWORKS software and 3D printer’s firmware updated. Updates often include bug fixes and new features that can improve the export process and print quality.
  7. Test Prints
    • Before committing to a full-scale print, consider doing a small test print. This can help identify any potential issues and save material and time.

By following these steps and tips, you can ensure a successful conversion of 3D models into STL files suitable for 3D printing, resulting in high-quality prints and efficient use of resources.
